The paper looks at the comic characters of Polish provincial gentry in Zygmunt Kaczkowski’s six-volume cycle of short stories and novels Ostatni z Nieczujów (The Last of the Nieczujas), published between 1853 and 1855, but first periodically printed. According to modern researchers and critics of the 19th century Kaczkowski is numbered among the most important 19th-century writers, who included Sarmatic issues in their prose. Attention is paid to the following characters: noblemen who become frenchified and abandoned old Polish tradition, versus conservatists and traditionalists; eccentrics lords and infamous revellers; brave and reckless fellows, who fight duels or live a life of soldiering, poverty-stricken noblemen and cosmopolitan free-...
